Close to Villa Emmelia are many coastal villages and other places you could visit like: Chalkida (high tide phenomenon, the Venetian castle, night life), Amarynthos (excellent fish food), Lefkanti, Steni (mountain village with water streams and meat taverns), the local wineries – to get acquainted to Evia’s world-famous wine varieties.

Marmari

Beautiful sandy beach – Megali Ammos – every year due to the sea currents changes its shape, amazing sunset. A must visit to the Petalioi islands, a complex of ten small islands – some of them are privately owned by shipping families, one of them by Picasso’s children. Available activities.

Amarynthos

Coastal village, seaside walk, swimming at the town’s beach, very good fish food.

Steni

Pano Steni & Kato Steni – scenic mountain village with water springs and excellent meat and cooked food. You’ll find local products (honey, pasta, cheese, herbs, etc.) Take empty bottles with you to fill them with crystal clear water from the springs. The most famous is called “Vrisi giatrou”. A must visit to Agia Kiriaki church, nearby at Kambya village. A small church lying on a rock, water springs all around, even inside the church! Beautiful landscape with plane trees!

     

Chalkis

Capital of the island, at the old bridge you’ll see the unique tidal phenomenon – the water’s direction changes every 6 hours – “crazy waters” as the locals say. The great philosopher Aristotle spent the last years of his life in Chalkis (birthplace of his mother) and the myth says that he drowned when he felt into the Euripus waters in his attempt to explain the mystery of this unique phenomenon.

Many cafeterias, restaurants and night clubs around the bridge with sea view, the Venetian castle of Karababa with amazing view and the Archaeological Museum.

Swimming at the beach “Asteria” or “Alykes” both very well organized beaches, cosmopolitan atmosphere but are also preferred by the locals and the Athenians. 

The New High Bridge of Chalkida has the thinnest deck in the world – only 45cm – and it’s one of the biggest cable bridges of Europe.

Kymi

The “balcony of the Aegean”, birthplace of the doctor who found the Pap test (George Papanikolaou). Must visit to Choneftiko with the healing water from the springs (cleans the kidneys among others benefits), beautiful landscape, take empty bottles to fill them with water. Buy local products (cheese, the famous dried figs of Kymi, baklava, etc.). Swim at the beach Soutsini, Mourteri, etc. Some notable local products include: figs of Kymi (PDO) – Feta cheese – Mushrooms Dirfys – Sheep yogurt – Myzithra cheese – Wine from local wineries – Herbs – Pasta (chylopites, traxana) – Olive oil – Olives – Nuts, almonds, chestnuts – Baklava from Kymi

Limni

Coastal scenic village. Close enough is the Drimonas water fall (20’ from Limni). Amazing natural beauty.

Platanistos

Platanistos is a lovely little village hidden in a lush green valley about 22 kilometers away from Karystos. A stream runs through the valley starting from the small Panochori Gorge high up on the slopes of Mount Ochi and ending it’s a short journey to the sea at the Potami Beach bellow.

     

Seta

Beautiful mountain village, the most mountainous one of the island, excellent meat and cooked food.

Karystos

Swim at the beach Bouros Agalma or Agia Paraskevi.

Edipsos

Coastal town which has many tourists every summer due to the thermal springs where they cure many diseases.

Nileas River

Nileas river, named by Nileas, son of god Poseidon, is located in northern Evia. It has its source on Mount Xiro, in Makrolivado point, in the village of Kerasia and it ends up along with Kireas, on Krya Vrysi beach of the Aegean Sea.

Drakospita (Dragonhouses)

Τhe most known but enigmatic monuments of Evia. This is a total of 23 ancient megalithic structures, found in the mountainous areas around Styra, the best preserved example being the Dragonhouse on the peak of Mount Oche.

Caves

Over 200 small and large caves have been found and recorded on the island, of which about half have been designed and researched. Twenty-six of those researched are of great dimensions and apart from the invaluable stalagmites and stalactites, they show signs of human presence during prehistoric and historical times. Read more
